“Where I’m From”

I am from the bonding game nights

From Scrabble and Jenga

I am from the crowded house in the back

Loud, funny

It sounded like a comedy

I am from the tulips that occupy the dining table

The way it brings life to the room

Cheerful, joyful, and bright

I am from the laughing too loud and sarcasm

From Steven and James and Mia

I am from the bad eyesight and sarcastic humor

From “stick together” and “do good to get a better future”

I am from tiring mornings in church

Anticipating the family breakfast

I am from San Antonio, Texas and East LA

Tamales and Tacos

From the mother who worked hard to put food on the table and clothes on our backs,

The brother who took on more responsibilities to help out,

Around the house, adventures are on display for everyone to see

I am from the long family tree that extends across the states.

So the reason I did this poem was that it was an assignment for my AVID class. (AVID is life! lol)  I love projects like this because you tend to see everyone’s life behind the scenes. You get to see how they are outside the school day. For my project, I wrote about the sarcasm and loud laughter that you can find when stepping in my house.  I remember that whenever we had the whole family together the room would get so loud. We would argue and laugh. Our game nights are filled with arguments so much that we needed to get a scrabble dictionary for the board game because we didn’t trust anyone to not cheat. Together my family is a loud bundle of joy. My mom always says that she’s afraid to have all of us together in one room because we get so sarcastic and extremely loud. My brother starts everyone laughing and we tend to continue it.
