On November 26th, 2016 Schurr High school Hosted the 5k Taco Mambo Run. Montebello and Schurr High School’s bands played as the pep rally for the runners. Most of the band went to Hawaii to participate in a parade representing Pearl Harbor. The band members that stayed behind helped bring this wonderful event to life.
It all begins, the day before. We began making goodie bags for the participants. Everyone brought something to contribute to the goodie bags. My mom had asked some agents that she had known and some contributed granola bars, pens, finished and key chains. Some of the other adults that were helping with the event had brought mini lotion bottles and pens. We included papers about nutrition and exercise. We created a train-like process to quickly put the items in the bags. Once we finished, I asked if they needed help making posters. I made a poster that said not to eat or drink on the field. finished, it was getting late and dark outside so I left home.
The next day we arrived at the school around five in the morning. We began by hanging up posters in front of the school. Then, we headed upstairs to set up the t-shirts and stands. We started setting up the registration stand with the t-shirts. I began by helping one of the parents and then they told me to do my own stack in order to help the process go by quicker. Once I had finished the stack of t-shirts I went to the color guard booth. My brother’s friend that was a chef volunteered to help fundraise money for the color guard fund.We had the time of our life just selling tacos for members of the community that attended the marathon. My brother, being as silly and loud as he is, he made everyone laugh. To a couple that was holding hands, he said, ” Why hold hands when you could hold a taco?” We laugh at everything he said. He just kept attracting attention to the stand. I helped by setting up the booth and cleaning it up at the end. I would help give out sodas and plates to the customers. Once the event was done and everyone left, we cleaned up and put away the tables.
It was an amazing experience and I am glad that I had the chance to participate in the run. The day was loud and crazy but what day in the Spartan Legion isn’t?
