SHS Spartan Legion

In 2016, most people know that I became part of the Schurr High Colorguard. When I am asked if I am in a sport, of course, I answer, ” I’m in colorguard.” I am always asked, ” What’s that?” or they just look at me with a confused look. I say that it’s the people with the flags with the band for halftime at field shows. In rare occasions when the people actually know what it is, I get asked, “Does colorguard count as a sport?” In my head, I’m yelling back at them saying, “WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IT ISN’T?!” In a calm manner, I tell them that we are a sport because we work as hard or even more as the other teams. We put in so much dedication and effort into our program.

Not everyone realizes how much time we put into this program. We spend so much time together that we go from strangers to friends to family. It’s not only going to practice for a couple hours and marching on the field. It’s learning to work as one to march in time with our equipment/instruments. It’s learning to put on a show with your family around you. It’s learning simple responsibilities, like being on time or being prepared. We learn many things from being focused and concentrated to be quick on our feet to solve problems on our own. In this family of ours, we learn to being polite when the person in-charge is talking. We try not to give attitude because we’ve been trained in a way that we know that it would get us in trouble.  Even though many will think that “Everyone should automatically know this because it’s common sense,” but trust me, I’ve met many people in my life that don’t know to be quiet when someone talks or if you come late to something, you don’t take your time because you think you’re already late so what’s the difference. I’ve noticed the difference between people that are and are not in the Spartan Legion. So yes, this is a sport. We do the basic of running laps and stretching before practice but we go beyond the simple things. It’s not just jogging on the track, it’s jogging in step, as one. It’s not just jumping jacks that everyone does separately. It’s 10 jumping jacks that everyone does with the same counts.( and if you mess up, you better get ready to hear everyone get mad at you because you were not paying attention. When they say 10 jumping jacks, you don’t’ do 9, you don’t do 11. You do 10!) We go in an extra hour before school to practice, sometimes two hours on Wednesdays. We stay multiple hours after school because we actually care about what we do. We practice a couple hours before football games and we still stay after to put away our equipment.  So, next time someone asks if band, colorguard, or drill counts as a sport, say YES because we work so hard and put in so much effort that it becomes our lives.

“If band was so easy, it would be called football.”

October 15, 2017 ~Amazing job to the Spartan Legion on our first double day of the season yesterday. Oct. 14 was a memorable day because no matter what we placed we can tell our hard work is paying off. A lot of us know we can do better but, at least we know what to fix. Overall we all had a blast throughout the day, even though it was long.  I want to thank all the parents and volunteers that help us, from making sure we have uniforms ready to making sandwiches for us during our hour lunch, from helping us load trucks to making sure we have enough water and food and our bodies. You all are the reason that we are as great as we are. Without our booster parents, we would be nothing so thank you so much! So, everyone, practice your heart out this week and prepare yourself for our next competitions.
