November is the month to spread awareness of diabetes by wearing blue. On the beautiful Saturday of November 14, it is World Diabetes Day in support of those defeating this illness. This year’s theme is entitled, “All for 1” in respect for those with Type 1 diabetes.
The main types of diabetes consist of Type 1 and Type 2. Between both types, the main difference is that one is genetically caused, which is why it is more likely to be found at a younger age, whereas the other has can appear later on in life. For example, my father has type two diabetes and throughout the last decade he has struggled creating a normal life to conquer this disease.
Diabetes is an illness that may change your lifestyle but once you learn more about it, it becomes easier. When my father was diagnosed, he began only taking pills in order to regulate his blood sugar. As time passed, he began to lose hope. For about five years, my family and I worried about him and health. Because of his major weight loss and lack of insulin, he became unrecognizable to family and friends

During this pandemic, he obtained enough courage to go to the hospital and receive the treatment needed. After a week in the hospital, he came home and needed four insulin shots a day. Although it was difficult to create a schedule about when to give him insulin shots and medication, my family united together.
This is such a disease that may seem impossible at first but with support and encouragement, you can defeat it. We were worried that my father would not last long; that he would never be the funny, loving father again, but with courage and support from friends and family, he is more healthy than ever before. Now, he can tell jokes all day long with a smile on his face.
To anyone that is battling this illness, remember that nothing is impossible. There will be those days that the disease might want to take control, but do not let that discourage you. You are stronger than you believe. Help spread awareness by wearing blue this month.
